Information on the annual renewal of the personal water-rescue licence (“talon”), applicable fees, and what the renewal exam covers.
2026 schedule
2026 licence renewal takes place at the BRC Regional Council building in Varna, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 13:00–15:00.

Who needs annual renewal
Annual licence renewal is mandatory for lifeguards holding the Pool & Water-Park, Open-Water & Sea, and Senior Lifeguard qualifications. It is issued on the basis of an exam protocol signed by the water-rescue specialist and stamped by the BRC Regional Council secretariat.
Graduates of a base course receive a free personal licence in their graduation year, based on the final exam protocol.
What the renewal exam covers
The exam is run by a committee appointed by order of the BRC Regional Council secretariat director.
Pool & Water-Park Lifeguard
- 50 m freestyle in 50 seconds.
- First-aid demonstration for a water-incident casualty.
Open-Water & Sea Lifeguard
- 100 m freestyle in 1:40 min.
- Individual retrieval from 25 m with a „sailor“ hold in 1:10 min (1:00 min in a 20 m pool).
- First-aid demonstration.
Senior Lifeguard
- 100 m freestyle in 1:40 min.
- Individual retrieval from 25 m, same as the Sea Lifeguard exam.
- First-aid demonstration.
Water Rescue Instructor
- Participation in a „Water Rescue Instructors“ seminar within 3 years.
